CPT Production Machinist Jobs
Production Machinist roles qualify for CPT when your engineering technology, manufacturing, or precision machining program explicitly integrates shop-floor work into the curriculum. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and the work must align with your degree's learning objectives, not just your major.

Does Production Machinist work qualify for CPT under an engineering technology degree?
Yes, if your program's curriculum explicitly includes hands-on manufacturing or precision machining components. Degrees in manufacturing engineering technology, mechatronics, or industrial technology are the most straightforward fits. Your DSO will verify that the specific employer's job duties, operating CNC machines, reading technical drawings, performing quality inspections, map to your enrolled coursework before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
Can I do CPT at a small machine shop that has never hired an F-1 student?
Yes. Unlike H-1B or OPT STEM extension, CPT doesn't require the employer to file anything with USCIS. The authorization lives entirely on your I-20 and is granted by your DSO. The employer just needs to provide a written offer letter with your role, hours, and start date. Smaller shops often have no prior F-1 experience but face no legal barrier to hiring you on CPT.
How do I find Production Machinist employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Production Machinist roles filtered by employers with CPT and OPT hiring history. Manufacturers with federal contracts are also strong targets because E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for them, meaning their HR teams are already set up to process work-authorization documentation without confusion about what CPT actually requires.
Does my CPT for a Production Machinist role affect my future OPT?
Only if you use full-time CPT for 12 or more cumulative months. At that point, USCIS considers your OPT eligibility exhausted and you won't receive the standard 12-month post-completion OPT period. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward this threshold regardless of duration, so structuring your machinist role as part-time during enrolled semesters preserves your OPT.
What documents does a Production Machinist employer need to keep on file for a CPT hire?
The employer needs a copy of your CPT-authorized I-20 showing the specific employer name, authorized dates, and position. They'll also complete an I-9 using your I-20 and passport as identity and work-authorization documents. Some manufacturers request your SEVIS record number for their HR files. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS, your school handles the authorization entirely through the DSO.
