Get Access To All JobsAutomation Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automation Engineer internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your degree program and your DSO approves it. Automation Engineer positions typically qualify for students in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or systems engineering programs. The job description must demonstrate a direct connection to your enrolled coursework, not just a general technical role.
Can I do part-time CPT as an Automation Engineer while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT means working 20 hours or fewer per week while enrolled full-time. Many Automation Engineer co-ops and internships are structured this way. Your I-20 will reflect part-time CPT authorization, and 12 months or less of part-time CPT does not affect your future OPT eligibility, unlike full-time CPT.
How do I find employers that already understand CPT for engineering roles?
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with a track record of hiring F-1 students in engineering roles. Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for engineering positions before are already familiar with work authorization requirements, which makes the CPT disclosure and onboarding process significantly faster than approaching employers with no prior experience.
What happens if my Automation Engineer CPT job changes scope after authorization?
If your duties change materially, your DSO may need to issue an updated I-20 reflecting the new job description. Notify your DSO immediately if the employer reassigns you to a different team or project. Working outside the scope of your authorized CPT can jeopardize your F-1 status, so documenting any changes in writing with your employer protects you.
Does full-time CPT as an Automation Engineer affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not count against OPT. Many Automation Engineer students structure longer engagements as part-time specifically to preserve their OPT option.
