Get Access To All JobsMechanical Project Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Mechanical Project Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your engineering curriculum and your DSO approves it before your start date. Mechanical Project Engineer positions typically qualify because they require applying core mechanical engineering principles, such as thermodynamics, materials science, and systems design, directly on live projects. Your school's CPT policy and your program's course requirements determine the specific documentation needed.
Can I do CPT at a firm that works on government contracts?
Yes, but government contractors often require E-Verify enrollment and may have facility security clearance requirements that affect F-1 students. Confirm with the employer whether the project you'd be assigned to requires any clearance level, since F-1 students on CPT are generally ineligible for most clearance-gated positions. Non-cleared engineering roles at the same firm are usually available.
How do I find Mechanical Project Engineer employers who understand CPT?
Use Migrate Mate to search for employers with verified LCA filing history in mechanical engineering job codes. Companies that have filed LCAs for engineering roles have already worked through work authorization logistics and are more likely to have HR processes in place for F-1 CPT students, shortening the onboarding conversation significantly.
Does CPT for a Mechanical Project Engineer role affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. If you plan to use post-graduation OPT or a STEM OPT extension after your degree, track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time CPT offer.
What project types are most commonly offered to CPT Mechanical Project Engineers?
CPT Mechanical Project Engineers most often work on equipment specification and procurement, HVAC or piping system design, manufacturing process improvement, or energy system commissioning. Infrastructure firms, industrial equipment manufacturers, and utilities tend to run project timelines that fit naturally into semester-length CPT windows, making them practical targets for F-1 students seeking structured, curriculum-aligned work.
