Get Access To All JobsConstruction Manager CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Manager role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your degree program includes construction management, civil engineering, or a related field and your school treats the work as an integral part of your curriculum. Your DSO makes the final determination. Roles involving project scheduling, subcontractor coordination, budget oversight, or site safety management align closely with standard construction management curricula and are routinely approved for CPT.
Can I do CPT as a Construction Manager at a residential homebuilder versus a commercial general contractor?
Both can qualify, but the curriculum fit argument differs. Commercial general contractors handle larger multi-phase projects that map directly to project controls and construction law coursework. Residential builders may require a stronger written justification showing how the day-to-day duties connect to your specific program learning outcomes. Your DSO will weigh the job description against your course requirements in either case.
How do I find Construction Manager employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Construction Manager roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with prior work authorization filing history. Firms that have sponsored H-1B visa or OPT employees in project management or engineering roles are generally more prepared to onboard CPT students, since they already have I-9 and E-Verify processes in place.
What happens to my OPT if I use full-time CPT as a Construction Manager during the summer?
One summer of full-time CPT, typically under 12 months total, does not reduce your OPT eligibility. If your cumulative full-time CPT across all CPT authorizations reaches 12 months or more, you lose your post-completion OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, never counts against OPT regardless of duration, so structuring a part-time site role can protect your future work authorization.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your employer must give you a formal offer letter listing your job title as Construction Manager or a closely related title, your exact start and end dates, the work location address, and weekly hours. Some DSOs also require a brief description of duties. Vague letters referencing general construction work without tying duties to your program often get sent back for revision, so confirm the letter language before submitting to your school.
