Get Access To All JobsStructural Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position directly fulfills a required or elective course in your civil or structural engineering program. Your DSO will assess whether tasks like load analysis, structural modeling, or drawing production integrate with your curriculum. Roles that involve only administrative or non-engineering work typically don't qualify, so review the job description carefully before your DSO meeting.
Can I do CPT at a small structural engineering firm?
Firm size doesn't affect CPT eligibility, but smaller firms may not have an HR process for onboarding F-1 students. Confirm the firm is enrolled in E-Verify and that a licensed PE will supervise your work. Your I-20 update requires an employer name and address, so the firm needs to provide that documentation before your DSO can authorize your CPT.
What happens if my CPT role shifts to a different project site?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer and typically a specific location listed on your I-20. If your firm reassigns you to a project at a different address, notify your DSO immediately. Depending on your school's policy, you may need an I-20 amendment. Working at an unauthorized location can be treated as unauthorized employment, which carries serious F-1 status consequences.
How do I find Structural Engineer employers who regularly hire CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists employers with documented LCA filing history for structural engineering roles, which signals experience sponsoring international workers. Filtering by role and filing activity helps you prioritize firms that already understand work authorization rather than spending time educating employers from scratch during the offer process.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT use eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count against your OPT. If you're planning to use CPT across multiple semesters for a Structural Engineer role, track your cumulative full-time hours carefully with your DSO to protect your OPT.
