ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support Distribution Control Center and ADMS software as a Grid Ops Engineering intern at Xcel Energy, gaining hands-on experience in power system operations.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
1) Supporting model tuning and tracking non-communicating devices
2) Assisting with alarm limits and special projects or Grid Operations Engineering (GOE) focuses
3) Working with Engineering staff to support the Distribution Control Center and enable ADMS software
4) Performing entry-level engineering analyst tasks supporting tools, programs, and databases for outage coordination, power flow studies, and power system monitoring
5) Gaining practical operations experience and mentoring to build professional confidence and people skills
This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current student, Freshman or higher (as of Fall 2027)
- Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred but not required)
- Some field visits but no routine travel required.
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Interest in power systems.
- Willingness to learn and ask questions.

Does an Operations Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position connects directly to your field of study. Operations Engineering roles typically involve process improvement, systems analysis, supply chain management, or production coordination, all of which align with engineering and business programs. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring a copy of the job description and a written explanation of how the duties integrate with your current coursework.
Can I do CPT part-time as an Operations Engineer while finishing classes?
Yes. CPT can be part-time, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, or full-time at 20 hours or more. Part-time CPT has no effect on your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely, so if you plan to use OPT after graduation, stay under that threshold.
How do I find Operations Engineer employers who are open to CPT students?

What documents does the employer need from me to start the CPT hiring process?
The employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed by your DSO, your current visa stamp, and your I-94 record showing valid F-1 status. Some employers also request a copy of your enrollment verification. Have all of these ready before your start date because you cannot legally begin work until CPT is authorized on your I-20.
Does CPT as an Operations Engineer count toward my STEM OPT extension later?
CPT itself doesn't count toward or against your STEM OPT eligibility, except if you use 12 or more months of full-time CPT, which eliminates standard OPT. If your Operations Engineer role falls under a STEM-designated CIP code in your program, you'll still be eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after graduation, provided your employer enrolls in E-Verify at that time.
