Get Access To All JobsQuality Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the duties directly connect to your field of study. Programs in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, or quality management typically support CPT for Quality Engineer positions. Your DSO will verify that the job description references skills your enrolled courses develop, such as statistical process control, root cause analysis, or inspection methodology.
Can I do CPT at a small manufacturer that has never hired an F-1 student before?
Yes. CPT authorization is issued by your school, not the employer, so the employer doesn't need prior F-1 experience. What matters is that the role is a genuine fit for your curriculum and that you secure an offer letter with the required details before your DSO submits the authorization. The employer does need to complete standard I-9 verification once you start.
How do I find Quality Engineer employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Quality Engineer roles filtered by employers with LCA filing history in this occupation. Employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for quality roles in the past are more likely to understand F-1 work authorization requirements. Targeting these companies shortens the conversation about CPT paperwork.
What O*NET occupation code applies to Quality Engineer CPT roles?
Quality Engineers typically fall under O*NET code 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers) or 51-9061 (Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers), depending on the role's focus. Your school may use the O*NET profile to verify the position qualifies under your program's CIP code. Review the O*NET task and knowledge descriptions alongside your course catalog when drafting your DSO authorization request.
Does full-time CPT as a Quality Engineer affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT authorized for 12 or more cumulative months eliminates your OPT eligibility under USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. If you plan to use OPT for H-1B visa timing after graduation, confirm your weekly hours with your DSO and keep documentation of each authorized period.
