Weston & Sampson is seeking a Co-Op employee for our Spring 2027 full-time Co-Op/Intern program running from January - May. You will be performing cross-connection control surveys for both private and public water systems. This role will be located out of our Plymouth, MA or Wilmington, MA office.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What you will do:
- Basic computer literacy skills required including an understanding of Microsoft Office suite
- Effectively use a backflow test kit
- Develop understanding of cross connection system and work towards meeting daily production requirements
- Develops production skills by learning how to use the software efficiently
- Document field activity for client and office
- Completing testing & surveys assigned
- Develop customer oriented interpersonal skills
- Seek clarification on unclear requirements and to identify and clarify assumptions in design and implementation
- Exhibits Weston & Sampson's core values, focuses on understanding and demonstrating these values
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What you will bring:
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent is required
- 0 to 1 year of experience in a related field with a basic understanding/interest in water systems
- Must be willing to obtain required licenses within specified timeframe
- Valid driver’s license is required with good driving record
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team environment and get along with others
- Ability to meet deadlines, to work cooperatively with others and when necessary, work overtime and weekends
- Must be able to communicate through email and complete basic data entry and documentation requirements
COMPENSATION
Salary Range Per Hour: $22.00 - $26.00 Based on Education

Does a Field Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work directly relates to your degree program and your DSO confirms the connection. Roles in construction management or environmental engineering qualify when your coursework covers those disciplines. Your school sets the final standard, not the employer job title.
Can I work across multiple job sites on a single CPT authorization?
It depends on how your school structures CPT authorizations. Some DSOs issue authorization tied to a specific employer only, while others will cover multiple project sites under one employer umbrella. If your Field Engineer role requires traveling between sites or regions, clarify this with your DSO before accepting the offer and ask whether each new location needs a separate authorization update.
How do I find Field Engineer employers who regularly hire CPT students?

Employers who have hired F-1 students before are familiar with CPT paperwork timelines and are less likely to withdraw offers due to authorization delays. Energy, utilities, and infrastructure contractors tend to have established processes for CPT and OPT onboarding compared to smaller regional firms.
What happens to my CPT status if a field project ends early or the employer reassigns me?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer listed on your I-20 endorsement. If your project ends early or you're reassigned to a different employer entity, your current CPT authorization may no longer cover your work. Notify your DSO immediately and request an updated I-20 before the new assignment begins. Working without current authorization puts your F-1 status at risk.
Is full-time CPT for a Field Engineer role risky for my OPT eligibility?
Yes, if you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you permanently lose eligibility for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not count against your OPT. Many Field Engineer roles are structured as full-time. If you plan to use OPT or STEM OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT usage carefully with your DSO.
