Get Access To All JobsFacilities Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Facilities Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on how closely the job duties map to your degree program. Facilities engineering work typically involves building systems, energy management, and maintenance operations. If your major covers mechanical, civil, environmental, or industrial engineering disciplines, your DSO can generally authorize CPT as long as the employer's job description explicitly connects those tasks to your coursework.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Facilities Engineer without affecting my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT regardless of how many semesters you use it. If you're planning a full-time summer internship in a Facilities Engineer role, count those months carefully before committing.
How do I find Facilities Engineer employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Search Migrate Mate for Facilities Engineer roles and filter by employers with work authorization filing history. Companies that have sponsored international employees before are far more likely to understand CPT documentation requirements and to cooperate quickly when your DSO requests details about the position.
What documentation does my DSO need to authorize CPT for a Facilities Engineer position?
Your DSO typically needs a written offer letter stating your job title, duties, start and end dates, weekly hours, and the employer's address. For Facilities Engineer roles, be specific about the technical scope, whether that's HVAC systems, energy auditing, preventive maintenance planning, or building automation. A generic offer letter citing only the job title is usually not sufficient.
Can I switch Facilities Engineer employers mid-semester while on CPT?
No. CPT authorization is employer-specific and tied to the job offer your DSO reviewed. If you change employers or your role changes significantly, such as moving from a building operations team to a capital projects team, you need a new CPT authorization before your first day at the new position. Starting work before your DSO updates your I-20 puts your F-1 status at risk.
