Get Access To All JobsStructural Project Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Structural Project Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work ties directly to your enrolled engineering coursework. Roles involving structural load analysis, AutoCAD or Revit documentation, foundation design, or construction observation typically satisfy the integral-curriculum requirement. Your DSO will review the offer letter and confirm the connection to your academic program before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
Can I work on multiple projects for the same employer under one CPT authorization?
Generally yes, as long as all projects fall within the scope described in your CPT authorization and stay with the same employer listed on your I-20. If your employer rotates you to a new project at a different client site with substantially different duties, check with your DSO first, as some schools treat that as a separate CPT placement requiring updated authorization.
How does full-time CPT for a structural engineering role affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT exhausts your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM extension. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count against that limit regardless of duration. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the cumulative total with your DSO before accepting a full-time structural role.
What should a CPT offer letter include for a structural engineering position?
The letter should name the specific engineering duties, the project or project type, the tools and software involved (Revit, SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD Civil 3D), your start and end dates, hours per week, and the employer's physical address. DSOs reject letters that list only a job title. A detailed letter also supports your case if an employer later files an H-1B visa petition for the same role.
Where can I find Structural Project Engineer jobs that hire CPT students?
Migrate Mate lists structural engineering roles from employers with documented work-authorization filing history, which is a practical filter for CPT students who can't afford to spend weeks on employers unfamiliar with F-1 authorization. You can search by location, project type, and employer size to match openings to your CPT authorization timeline and academic term dates.
