CPT Electrical Engineer Jobs

Electrical Engineer CPT jobs let F-1 students apply circuit design, power systems, and embedded systems coursework directly in industry. Your DSO must authorize each CPT placement before you start, and the role must connect to your degree program. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours weekly) keeps your full-time OPT eligibility intact after graduation.

Electrical Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does my electrical engineering coursework need to directly relate to my CPT job duties?

Yes. CPT requires an integral curricular connection, not just a general field match. A role focused on power distribution qualifies for an electrical engineering student in a power systems course, but a purely software development role likely won't. Your DSO will review your offer letter against your enrolled courses and may require a faculty signature confirming the connection before issuing the CPT authorization on your I-20.

Can I do CPT at a defense contractor or government lab as an electrical engineer?

You can work at defense contractors as an F-1 CPT student, but many roles require U.S. citizenship or a security clearance that F-1 students are ineligible to hold. Before pursuing these employers, ask the recruiter directly whether the position is open to F-1 visa holders. Unclassified research roles and commercial divisions of defense firms are the most accessible options for CPT students.

How do I find electrical engineering employers who are already comfortable hiring CPT students?

Employers with a history of filing Labor Condition Applications for engineering roles have already worked through DOL prevailing wage requirements and are familiar with F-1 employment rules. Migrate Mate lets you filter for companies with active LCA filing history in electrical and electronics engineering, so you can focus your applications on employers who won't need basic education about your work authorization status.

Does part-time CPT affect my ability to do full-time CPT or OPT later?

Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, does not count toward the 12-month full-time CPT threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility, regardless of how many part-time CPT terms you complete. Full-time CPT terms do count cumulatively, so if you've done two six-month full-time co-ops you've used your 12-month limit. Confirm your running total with your DSO before each new term.

What should I do if an employer asks me to start before my CPT authorization is processed?

Do not start work before your updated I-20 reflects the CPT authorization. Starting even one day early constitutes unauthorized employment under USCIS rules, which can jeopardize your F-1 status and future visa applications. Communicate the processing timeline to your employer in writing, provide your DSO's estimated turnaround time, and request a start date adjustment. Most employers familiar with international students will accommodate the delay.
