Get Access To All JobsConstruction Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role requires applying engineering principles covered in your degree program, such as structural analysis, construction management, or materials testing. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific job duties, not just the title, align with your curriculum. Bring a detailed offer letter that lists technical responsibilities, not a generic description.
Can I work on a construction site while on CPT?
Yes. CPT authorizes work in the field that is integral to your degree, and on-site construction engineering work, including quality control, project coordination, or inspection duties, qualifies if your program curriculum covers those competencies. Your I-20 must list the specific employer and employment dates before you step on site.
What happens if my CPT construction engineering role extends beyond one semester?
CPT lasting 12 months or more of full-time authorization eliminates your eligibility for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of duration. If you're planning to use OPT post-graduation, structure your CPT as part-time or limit full-time authorizations to under 12 cumulative months.
How do I find construction engineering employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to browse construction engineering employers who have a track record of working with international candidates. Firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications for engineering roles are already familiar with work authorization requirements, which makes the CPT conversation significantly more straightforward than approaching employers with no prior experience sponsoring visa holders.
Is a general contractor the employer of record for my CPT, or can it be a subcontractor?
Your CPT employer of record must be the entity that directly supervises your work and pays your wages. If you're embedded with a subcontractor on a project site, that subcontractor should be listed on your I-20, not the general contractor. Your DSO needs the hiring entity's legal name, address, and FEIN to issue the authorization correctly.
