Get Access To All JobsConstruction Project Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Project Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your engineering program can demonstrate the role is integral to your curriculum. Construction Project Engineer positions typically involve schedule management, submittal review, RFI coordination, and site supervision, tasks that map directly to civil, structural, or construction management coursework. Your DSO will evaluate the offer letter and job duties against your degree requirements before authorizing CPT.
Can I work on a federal construction project as an F-1 CPT student?
You can work for a contractor on a federal project, but the employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, which federal contractors are required to use. Your F-1 status and CPT authorization don't create additional restrictions specific to federal sites, but confirm with your employer's HR team that your I-20 CPT endorsement and E-Verify record are both active before your first day on site.
How do I find construction employers that will sponsor CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for general contractors, construction management firms, and engineering companies with a history of LCA filings. Employers who've sponsored H-1B visa or other work visas before already have HR processes for authorization paperwork, which makes CPT onboarding faster. Focus on mid-size to large firms with dedicated HR teams rather than small subcontractors who may not have handled F-1 CPT before.
What happens if my CPT end date falls before the project wraps up?
CPT authorization is tied to the dates on your I-20, and working past that date violates your F-1 status. If the project extends, your DSO can issue an updated I-20 with a new end date, but only if you're still enrolled and the extension still qualifies as integral to your curriculum. Plan this in advance with your DSO, don't wait until the original end date has passed.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your post-completion OPT entirely. Part-time CPT and any amount of part-time CPT don't count toward that limit. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation for H-1B sponsorship, track your full-time CPT usage carefully. Your DSO can show you how many months you've accumulated so you don't inadvertently hit the cutoff before graduation.
