Get Access To All JobsIndustrial Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Industrial Engineer internship qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if the work is an integral part of your established curriculum and your DSO authorizes it before you start. Industrial Engineer roles typically qualify when they involve process analysis, systems optimization, or supply chain work directly tied to courses in your degree plan. Generic office roles with the same title but unrelated duties can be denied.
Can I do full-time CPT as an Industrial Engineer student?
You can, but full-time CPT used for 12 or more cumulative months cancels your OPT eligibility under USCIS rules. Many IE students use part-time CPT during the semester and switch to full-time during summer to preserve OPT. Talk to your DSO before committing to a full-year full-time placement.
What documentation do Industrial Engineer employers typically require for CPT?
Most employers ask for your I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed on page two, a valid F-1 visa, and your I-94 record confirming lawful status. Some manufacturers or defense contractors also request an E-Verify confirmation. Have all three ready before your first day to avoid a delayed start.
How do I find employers already familiar with CPT authorization?
Employers with a history of LCA filings for industrial engineering roles have already worked with work authorization requirements and are less likely to reject CPT candidates. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active LCA filing history for IE roles, so you can focus applications where authorization friction is lowest.
Does O*NET classify Industrial Engineer as a STEM role for CPT purposes?
O*NET classifies Industrial Engineer under a STEM-designated SOC code, which matters for CPT eligibility at programs that tie work authorization to STEM field definitions. It also means a qualifying full-time role can support a STEM OPT extension after graduation, provided you haven't exhausted OPT eligibility through full-time CPT use.
