Does an Architectural Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your degree program's curriculum and your DSO approves it before you start work. Roles involving structural systems design, building performance modeling, or construction documentation typically satisfy the integral curriculum requirement for architectural engineering programs. Your school's specific CPT policy determines approval, not USCIS directly.
Can I work at an architecture firm on CPT if my degree is in architectural engineering, not architecture?
Yes, but your DSO must confirm the firm's work scope aligns with your engineering curriculum, not just architectural practice. Firms that combine structural, mechanical, and architectural services are the strongest fit. Roles focused purely on aesthetic design or project management with no engineering component may not satisfy the integral curriculum requirement for an engineering degree program.
How do I find Architectural Engineer employers who are familiar with CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate to filter employers with documented work authorization filing history in engineering occupations. Firms that regularly hire international students understand the DSO authorization paperwork and E-Verify requirements CPT involves. Mid-size MEP and structural engineering consultancies tend to have more established onboarding processes for F-1 students than small residential design studios.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer's project gets delayed and my start date shifts?
CPT authorization is tied to specific employment dates on your I-20. If your start date changes, your DSO must issue a revised I-20 reflecting the new dates before you begin work. Starting before the revised authorization is in place puts you out of status. Notify your DSO immediately when any offer timeline changes and allow at least a few business days for processing.
Does full-time CPT during my degree affect my ability to get H-1B sponsorship later?
Full-time CPT doesn't directly affect H-1B visa eligibility, but it eliminates OPT if you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT. Without OPT, you lose cap-gap protection, which bridges your status from October 1 when H-1B employment begins. Architectural engineering graduates who exhaust full-time CPT must secure a timely H-1B approval with no gap in authorized status.
