CPT Materials Engineer Jobs
Materials Engineer CPT roles let you apply coursework in metallurgy, polymers, composites, or semiconductors directly in industry labs and R&D facilities. Your DSO must authorize CPT before your start date, and the work must tie to a specific course or degree requirement. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) preserves your full 12-month OPT eligibility.

Get Access To All JobsMaterials Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Materials Engineer internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the internship is an integral part of your curriculum and your school lists it as a required or elective course credit. The role must involve materials-specific work such as testing, process development, or failure analysis. Generic lab assistant roles that don't connect to your degree program won't clear DSO review. Get the job description in writing before submitting your CPT request.
Can I do CPT at a national lab or government contractor?
Yes, national labs and government contractors regularly hire F-1 CPT students for Materials Engineer roles in areas like structural alloys, coatings, and additive manufacturing. Some positions at facilities with security requirements may involve additional screening timelines, so confirm clearance requirements with the employer before accepting. Your CPT authorization itself comes from your DSO, not the employer or any federal agency.
How do I find employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students for materials roles?
Search Migrate Mate for Materials Engineer positions filtered by employers with LCA filing history in engineering occupations. Employers who've sponsored work authorization before are familiar with the documentation CPT requires, which makes the onboarding process faster. Aerospace, semiconductor, and automotive manufacturers tend to have structured internship pipelines with DSO authorization built into their offer process.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your standard 12-month OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, has no effect on OPT regardless of duration. If your Materials Engineer CPT role is full-time, plan your timeline carefully. STEM OPT extension eligibility requires that your employer be enrolled in E-Verify at the time of the extension application.
What documentation does my employer need from me to process CPT?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 with CPT authorization printed on page two, showing the employer name, role, authorized dates, and full-time or part-time status. Some employers also request a copy of your visa and a completed I-9 with your I-20 as the supporting document. Confirm with HR that your CPT end date on the I-20 covers your entire anticipated work period, since working even one day past the authorized end date is an unauthorized employment violation.
