Get Access To All JobsEnvironmental Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Environmental Engineer CPT qualify as integral to my curriculum?
Your DSO determines integrality based on your program requirements. Environmental engineering roles that involve applying coursework in hydrology, soil science, or environmental regulations typically qualify, especially when tied to a capstone project or practicum requirement. A formal job description linking specific tasks to named courses in your curriculum strengthens the authorization request.
Can I do part-time CPT at a federal agency while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT allows up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and does not count against your 12-month full-time CPT limit, which protects your OPT eligibility. Federal agencies like the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers regularly hire F-1 students for part-time environmental internships, but each semester requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO.
How do I find Environmental Engineer employers who are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Environmental Engineer roles and filter by employers with LCA filing history. Firms that have previously sponsored H-1B visa petitions for engineers are generally familiar with work authorization requirements and more willing to support CPT students. Environmental consulting firms, municipal utilities, and state environmental agencies are common starting points.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. If you're planning a full-time summer rotation, track your cumulative full-time CPT months carefully across all authorized periods. Your DSO can confirm your running total from your SEVIS record.
What O*NET code should I reference when requesting CPT authorization for an environmental role?
The primary O*NET occupation code for Environmental Engineers is 17-2081.00. Some roles in remediation or environmental compliance may fall under 17-2081.01 (Environmental Restoration Planners). Sharing the relevant O*NET job zone and task list with your DSO helps confirm that the proposed CPT duties align with your declared major and satisfies the integrality requirement.
