CPT Electrical Engineering Technician Jobs
Electrical Engineering Technician jobs fit CPT when the hands-on lab, testing, or circuit design work is written into your degree plan and authorized by your DSO before you start. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours weekly) keeps your full-time enrollment intact and protects your OPT eligibility after graduation.

Get Access To All JobsElectrical Engineering Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does electrical engineering technician work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum and your DSO confirms it satisfies a required or elective course credit. Roles involving circuit testing, prototype assembly, lab instrumentation, or CAD support in an electrical or electronics engineering program typically qualify. Your academic advisor and DSO make the final determination based on your specific degree plan.
Can I work part-time as an electrical engineering technician on CPT while staying enrolled full-time?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and does not affect your full-time enrollment requirement or your future OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT, which is 20 or more hours per week for one year or more, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so most F-1 students in engineering programs structure CPT as part-time whenever possible.
What does the offer letter need to say to get CPT authorized for this role?
Your DSO needs the offer letter to include your job title (Electrical Engineering Technician or equivalent), the employer's legal name and address, your start and anticipated end dates, hours per week, and a brief description of duties. The duties section is critical: it needs to map to your academic coursework, not just state a generic technician role. Missing any of these details typically delays authorization.
Will working as an electrical engineering technician on CPT help with future H-1B sponsorship?
Practical experience in a specialty occupation strengthens an H-1B visa petition, but the CPT itself doesn't create a sponsorship obligation. Employers who hire CPT students in technical roles and then convert them to full-time are common in engineering, but you need to confirm the employer's sponsorship policy before accepting. Use Migrate Mate to identify which companies have a track record of sponsoring engineers after internship or CPT placements.
What O*NET occupation code applies to electrical engineering technician roles on CPT?
Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians fall under O*NET code 17-3023. Reviewing the O*NET profile for this code helps you confirm that your job duties match the occupation's defined tasks and that the role meets the DOL's criteria for a specialty occupation, which is relevant if you pursue H-1B sponsorship later. Your DSO may also reference this code when documenting CPT eligibility in your academic file.
