ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a temporary, full-time, hourly paid position open to current students who will be returning to their studies once this work term is complete. This position is not available for remote work.
Work will be both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. Outside the office, standard workwear will consist of hard hats, safety boots, safety glasses and ear plugs, with other items as needed; these items will be provided.
Dates/Terms:
Summer Internship: May 26, 2027 - August 14, 2027 (End dates may be adjusted to coincide with school terms)
Housing/Relocation:
Housing is provided for students whose summer residence is more than 75 miles from the site.
Relocation is not provided for this internship.
What you will do:
- Assist the site with various duties, including:
- Project Work
- Advancing process related projects
- Troubleshoot process problem
- Inspecting chemical processing equipment
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or equivalent related program with a graduation date of May 2028 or later
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Must be able to work at heights, outdoors, and around potentially hazardous chemicals
- Must be comfortable and physically capable of entering and working in a confined space
- Must be able to hear and understand audible alarms, changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communications
- Experience in Microsoft Office Suite

Does a Mechanical Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's DSO confirms the position is an integral part of your engineering technology or applied mechanics curriculum. The role's tasks should map to your declared major, typically under SOC code 49-9071. Bring the job description and a letter from your employer to your DSO appointment so the curriculum connection can be documented clearly.
Can I work full-time as a Mechanical Technician on CPT?
You can, but accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program eliminates your post-completion OPT eligibility. Many F-1 students in mechanical programs deliberately structure their CPT as part-time, under 20 hours per week, to preserve OPT. Confirm your running total with your DSO before committing to a full-time schedule.
What documents does my employer need to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20, which lists the specific employer name, start and end dates, and whether the authorization is full-time or part-time. They'll also need your passport and visa for I-9 verification. If the employer is a federal contractor, E-Verify enrollment is required. Some manufacturers will also ask for a letter from your DSO confirming the academic requirement.
