Your DSO must authorize each position before you start. Roles covering test automation, software validation, or quality assurance pipelines map cleanly to most engineering curricula.

Get Access To All JobsQA Test Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a QA Test Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your degree program. QA Test Engineer positions covering software testing methodologies, automation frameworks, or quality assurance pipelines align with computer science and software engineering curricula at most universities. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the specific job duties map to your current coursework, so bring the job description to that conversation.
Can I do CPT for a QA role at a startup or small company?
Yes, company size doesn't determine CPT eligibility. What matters is whether the employer can provide work that integrates with your curriculum and whether they're set up to employ F-1 students legally. Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify and can provide a written offer describing your QA duties before your DSO submits the authorization. Smaller employers sometimes lack familiarity with F-1 documentation, so bring a checklist to your offer conversation.
How do I find QA Test Engineer jobs that are open to CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to find QA Test Engineer roles at employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings. Employers with active LCA history in software quality roles have already demonstrated willingness to navigate work authorization requirements, making them more receptive to CPT candidates than employers with no filing history.
Does full-time CPT as a QA engineer affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. If your QA internship is full-time, track your cumulative CPT hours carefully across all authorizations. Discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer, especially if you plan to use OPT for post-graduation employment.
What documentation does my employer need to support my CPT authorization?
Your DSO typically requires a written offer letter or employment agreement that specifies your job title, start and end dates, work location, and hours per week. For QA Test Engineer roles, the offer should describe specific duties such as test case development, automation scripting, or defect management rather than generic language. Some schools also require a statement from the employer confirming the educational purpose of the placement.
