Job Summary
Langan is seeking a Intern/Co-op – Land Surveying to join its collaborative team in San Antonio, TX. This individual will serve a key function in providing support to the Land Survey team in the collection of field data and information related to the preparation of survey maps and CAD files. In this role, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of progressive technologies as you work directly with an experienced and dynamic team of survey professionals and interact with technical specialists in other disciplines.
Job Responsibilities
- Support the survey crew in collection of site and utility information;
- Gain exposure to drone and scanning technologies;
- Preparing technical reports, survey plans and layout plans for projects such as utility construction, road and parking layout, and site improvements;
- Perform construction layout;
- Assist with office tasks including, but not limited to CAD drafting, data download, deed and map research, and filing;
- Maintain survey equipment and initiate repairs when necessary;
- Remain current on surveying practices, guidelines, and best practices; attend internal training to expand knowledge and skills; and
- Perform other duties as requested.
Qualifications
- Student actively pursuing a four year degree in Engineering Technology, Survey, or Civil Engineering;
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater is preferred;
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal;
- Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and judgment capabilities;
- Ability to effectively work independently and in a team environment;
- Field work that will require conducting boundary, topographic, utility, and architectural surveys;
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD; knowledge of Terramodel, Trimble, Leica and Topcon Total Stations, Trimble GPS and TDS is desired; and
- Travel may be required based on business needs and project assignments. Travel requirements may vary by position and may change based on business needs.

Does a Registered Land Surveyor job qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on your degree program. CPT is valid when the work is an integral part of your curriculum, so a geomatics, civil engineering, or geospatial science program will qualify more readily than an unrelated field. Your DSO determines eligibility by reviewing how the job duties map to specific required or elective courses in your program.
Can I work in the field on surveys during CPT, or am I limited to office tasks?
CPT covers both field and office duties as long as the employer structures your role as supervised training under a licensed Professional Land Surveyor. Field traverses, boundary research, and GPS data collection all count. What matters is that the duties are documented in your offer letter and connect to coursework your DSO can identify in your curriculum.
How do I find land surveying firms that have experience hiring F-1 students on CPT?

Does working as a land surveyor on CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't reduce your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, 20 or more hours per week, eliminates OPT eligibility entirely once you accumulate 12 or more months of it. Track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully across all employers and semesters.
What wage should I expect as an F-1 student on CPT in a land surveying role, and does it affect future sponsorship?
Your CPT wage doesn't need to meet any DOL prevailing-wage threshold, since CPT isn't an H-1B visa petition. However, if the employer later sponsors you for H-1B or permanent residence, they'll need to meet the prevailing wage for your occupation and location at that point.
