Kalmar Solutions, is seeking an Intern, Development Engineer Electrics to be based in Ottawa, KS for summer 2027. The Development Engineer Electrics Intern is responsible for the development and coordination of Systems design for Electronics, Controls and Mechatronics regarding Terminal Tractor (TT) within Mobile Equipment division (MED) based on customer needs, legislation and internal requirements and according to business strategies.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop electrical, controls and mechatronic designs for our TT product line.
- Integrate electrical components into truck chassis and cabins where product systems include hydraulics, pneumatics, structures and powertrain.
- Develop Network Databases for CAN, LIN, and Ethernet.
- Develop vehicle network topologies by implementing Kalmar Solutions standards.
- Understand current vehicle architecture and plan upgrades.
- Ensures the use of engineering standards, methodologies and global product development processes into engineering team’s daily work tasks.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering
Competencies:
- Knowledge required: Bill of Material Structures, CAD System AUTOCAD 2-D, INVENTOR 3-D Modeling Systems (experience with CATIA or PRO-E is acceptable) and PC Software Applications.
- Strong aptitude toward electrical, controls and mechatronic design
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Proficient in the use of Google software including Sheets, Docs
- Strong work ethic, dependable
- High Attention to Detail

Does a Development Engineer internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your school can document that the internship is an integral part of your curriculum, either as a required course credit or an elective your degree program formally recognizes. Job titles like Development Engineer, Systems Development Engineer, or Product Development Intern all qualify as long as the work aligns with your field of study and your DSO approves it.
Can I work full-time as a Development Engineer on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is permitted but has a significant consequence: 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT. Most F-1 students in development engineering roles choose part-time CPT during the academic year to protect their post-graduation options.
What does a Development Engineer employer need to know about CPT?
The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS or DOL for CPT. Authorization is entirely school-side. What HR does need to provide is a formal offer letter stating your title, start date, work location, and hours. Some employers also need to confirm they're comfortable with an I-20 as your work authorization document, since CPT doesn't generate a separate EAD card.
How do I find Development Engineer jobs where employers understand CPT?

Employers who have filed LCAs for development engineers before are more likely to have HR processes in place for F-1 students. Filtering by that signal cuts down on time spent educating hiring managers about CPT eligibility from scratch.
Can I do CPT at a startup that has never sponsored a visa?
Yes. CPT doesn't require the employer to sponsor a visa or file with USCIS, so a startup with no prior sponsorship history can still authorize your CPT work. The only requirements are a valid offer letter and your DSO's approval. The risk to evaluate is whether that startup will qualify for STEM OPT or H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation if you want to stay long-term.
