Get Access To All JobsElectrical Project Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Project Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your curriculum. Electrical engineering programs that include capstone projects, co-op requirements, or practicum credits typically satisfy this standard. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your enrolled program and the specific duties in your offer letter, so confirm the connection is explicit before applying.
Can I do CPT at an electrical engineering firm while still taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, allows you to remain a full-time student and work simultaneously. Full-time CPT requires you to be enrolled for credit tied directly to the work experience. Either way, the CPT authorization must be in place on your I-20 before your first day on the job.
How do I find Electrical Project Engineer employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search for engineering employers with a track record of hiring work-authorized international students. Filtering by role type and location helps you prioritize companies already comfortable with I-20 documentation and semester-based authorization windows, reducing back-and-forth with HR teams unfamiliar with CPT.
What does my employer need to provide for my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to supply a written offer letter that includes your job title, a description of duties tied to your field of study, your work location, your start and end dates, and the number of hours per week. Some DSOs also require a supervisor signature or company letterhead. Incomplete letters are the most common reason CPT requests are delayed.
Does completing CPT as an Electrical Project Engineer affect my future H-1B eligibility?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B visa eligibility, but the 12-month full-time CPT rule matters. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility, which is often the bridge to H-1B sponsorship. Keeping your CPT part-time or spread across multiple semesters protects that post-graduation pathway.
