PAE is seeking a motivated and inquisitive Building Performance/Regenerative Design Intern to join our team in any one of our major office locations, including: San Francisco, CA, Seattle, WA, New York, NY, Boston, MA, Denver, CO, Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA.

About The Program
Our internship program provides hands-on experience in sustainable engineering design. The 10 to 12 week paid program gives interns the opportunity to learn about the building design industry from a traditional viewpoint, and to learn the PAE and LUMA way. We have internships in the areas of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, lighting design, regenerative design, and building systems technology design.
Interns here work directly as part of our engineering and design teams. From small retrofits to high-profile Living Buildings, you'll gain an understanding of the entire design process - the planning, the execution, and the problem solving.

What We Offer
- Hourly base rate: $24.00 - $25.00
The base salary is one component of PAE’s competitive compensation package for employees. We take into consideration a variety of factors including but not limited to skills, abilities, experience, education, credentials, internal equity and geographic location in determining exact salary offered.

Does a Building Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies when the work directly integrates with your degree curriculum, not just relates to it generally. A mechanical or civil engineering program with coursework in HVAC systems, energy auditing, or building infrastructure creates a documentable curricular tie. Your DSO evaluates the match using your I-20, your course descriptions, and the job offer's stated duties.
What documents does an employer need to verify CPT work authorization?
Your employer needs your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the authorized employer name and period, your F-1 visa, your passport, and your EAD if your school issues one. The I-20 itself is the primary authorization document for CPT. Some employers also request a letter from your DSO confirming the authorization and the curricular connection.
Can I do CPT with a commercial real estate or property management company, or only with engineering firms?
CPT is employer-agnostic as long as the work aligns with your curriculum. A Building Engineer role at a commercial real estate firm managing mechanical systems, energy performance, or facilities infrastructure can qualify just as readily as one at an engineering consultancy. Your DSO approves based on job duties, not employer industry classification.
How do I find Building Engineer employers that already understand CPT?

Does full-time CPT as a Building Engineer affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT is defined as 20 or more hours per week. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT across your entire F-1 program, you are no longer eligible for OPT. Part-time CPT under 20 hours per week does not affect OPT eligibility regardless of duration. Confirm your weekly hours with your DSO before signing your offer letter.
