Does a Product Safety Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your engineering or systems safety program includes coursework in risk analysis, regulatory compliance, or product lifecycle management. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties in the offer letter directly advance your academic curriculum. Roles focused on hazard identification, failure mode analysis, or standards compliance like ISO or IEC frameworks typically meet this bar.
Can I do CPT at a company that uses third-party safety consultants rather than an in-house team?
CPT is tied to your employing entity, not the end client. If the company placing you is the one signing your offer letter and I-9, your authorization is with them. Situations where you'd be embedded at a separate facility under a consulting arrangement need careful DSO review, since the work location and supervisor relationship affect compliance.
How do I find Product Safety Engineer employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Migrate Mate shows which employers have filed for F-1 work-authorized roles in engineering and compliance, so you're not starting from scratch with employers who've never navigated CPT. Medical device, aerospace, and automotive manufacturers tend to have established processes because they hire from engineering graduate programs regularly.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the project I was hired for gets cancelled?
CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer and role, not a project. If your core duties remain safety engineering work with the same employer, a project cancellation alone doesn't void your authorization. If your role changes substantially or your employment ends, you need to report the change to your DSO immediately, since working outside your authorized CPT terms affects your F-1 status.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility for Product Safety Engineer roles later?
Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, which matters if you're planning to continue in safety engineering roles after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined by USCIS as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that limit. Structure your CPT terms carefully with your DSO if post-graduation OPT is part of your plan.
