Get Access To All JobsHigh School Teacher CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does student teaching qualify as CPT for F-1 students?
Yes, student teaching placements qualify as CPT when they are a required, credit-bearing component of your education degree program. Your DSO authorizes CPT on your I-20 before the placement begins. The placement must be with a specific employer, so you need a confirmed school district assignment, not just a general program requirement, before your DSO can issue authorization.
Can I do CPT at a private school or charter school?
Yes, CPT authorization isn't limited to public school districts. Private schools and charter schools qualify as CPT employers as long as your education program recognizes the placement for credit and your DSO approves the specific site. Verify that the school has a legitimate employer identification number, since your I-9 completion requires it regardless of school type.
How do I find high school districts that sponsor international teachers?
School districts that have previously sponsored international teachers on H-1B visas have publicly available Labor Condition Application filing records through DOL. Migrate Mate surfaces this data so you can identify districts with proven sponsorship history. Targeting those districts for your CPT placement also positions you for a smoother transition to H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, has no impact on OPT regardless of how many semesters you use it. Most student teaching placements run full-time during the placement term, so track your CPT days carefully with your DSO if you intend to use OPT after graduation.
What happens if my student teaching placement ends early or the school changes?
If your placement school changes or ends before the CPT end date on your I-20, you must stop working immediately and contact your DSO before starting at a new site. The new school must be re-authorized as a separate CPT employer with an updated I-20. Working at an unauthorized employer, even briefly, constitutes unauthorized employment and can terminate your F-1 status.
