CPT Professor Jobs
Professor roles on CPT let F-1 students integrate classroom instruction, research mentorship, or curriculum development directly into their degree program. Your DSO must authorize each CPT placement as integral to your curriculum, so the position's duties need to align with your field of study before your I-20 is updated.

Get Access To All JobsProfessor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professor role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the duties are integral to your curriculum. Teaching in your field of study, conducting research tied to your thesis, or developing course materials that fulfill a practicum requirement all qualify. Your DSO will assess whether the specific duties in your offer letter connect to your degree program before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
Can I work as a Professor under CPT before completing my coursework?
CPT is available while you're enrolled, not after you complete your degree requirements. Full-time CPT for 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility, so most F-1 students in Professor roles use part-time CPT during the academic year and full-time CPT only during summer or approved breaks. Confirm the hours with your DSO before accepting an offer.
What documentation does my employer need to hire me on CPT?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for their specific location, your F-1 visa, and your passport. They'll run Form I-9 verification using these documents. If the institution is E-Verify enrolled, your documents are also checked through that system. Some universities also request a letter from your DSO confirming the CPT is integral to your program.
How do I find Professor roles that have sponsored F-1 students before?
Migrate Mate shows employer-level DOL Labor Condition Application filing data, so you can see which universities and colleges have sponsored positions in your field. This tells you which institutions have already built out the HR and legal infrastructure needed to support international hires, making them more likely to navigate your CPT-to-sponsorship transition smoothly.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the role changes after I start?
Any material change to your CPT placement, such as a shift in duties, location, or employer department, requires a new I-20 with updated authorization from your DSO. Working under a role that no longer matches your CPT authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO immediately if your offer letter or day-to-day responsibilities change after your placement begins.
