CPT Adjunct Professor Jobs
Adjunct Professor roles can qualify for CPT when the teaching or research work is directly tied to your degree program and your DSO authorizes it before your start date. Many institutions hire adjuncts on a per-semester basis, so CPT authorization must align with each contract period. Part-time CPT is the most common arrangement, preserving your full-time student status.

Does adjunct professor work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO approves it before you start. The teaching or research duties must fall within your enrolled field of study. A graduate student in education or a STEM discipline teaching relevant coursework is a strong candidate. Your academic advisor typically needs to confirm the curricular connection in writing before the DSO can update your I-20.
Can I work as an adjunct professor part-time on CPT while staying enrolled full-time?
Yes, part-time CPT is designed for exactly this scenario. Working 20 hours or fewer per week preserves your full-time student status and keeps your OPT eligibility intact. Most F-1 students pursuing adjunct roles choose part-time CPT for this reason. Accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT is what eliminates OPT eligibility, so staying part-time is the standard approach.
How do I find colleges and universities open to hiring F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search Adjunct Professor roles and see which institutions have a track record of hiring international students. Institutions that run active SEVIS programs and regularly employ graduate teaching assistants are generally the most familiar with CPT documentation requirements. Targeting those employers reduces the risk of an offer falling through at the HR stage.
Do I need a new CPT authorization for each semester I teach as an adjunct?
Yes. CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, location, and date range on your I-20. Because adjunct contracts are issued per term, each new semester requires a fresh DSO authorization request before the contract period begins. Submit your request at least two weeks before your intended start date and confirm the authorized dates cover the full semester, including grading periods.
What documentation does a college's HR department typically need to hire me on CPT?
HR will need your valid passport, your current I-20 showing the CPT authorization for that specific role and date range, and your visa stamp. Some institutions also request your I-94 arrival record to confirm your status is current. Unlike OPT, there's no EAD card for CPT since the authorization lives on your I-20. Confirm with HR in advance that they accept I-20-based CPT rather than requiring an EAD.
