Get Access To All JobsCareer Counselor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Career Counselor role qualify as an integral part of my curriculum for CPT?
It qualifies if your program specifically prepares you for counseling, student affairs, or human development work and the job duties align with your coursework. Programs in counseling psychology, higher education administration, or student development typically satisfy this standard. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring your course catalog and a detailed job description to that conversation.
Can I do CPT as a Career Counselor on a part-time basis while staying in class?
Yes, and part-time CPT is often the better option. Working fewer than 20 hours per week keeps your full-time OPT eligibility intact after graduation, since 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT entirely. Many university career center roles are structured as part-time to accommodate student schedules, which makes them a practical fit.
What documents does my employer need to authorize my CPT work?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. Authorization happens entirely through your school. You'll need a written offer letter specifying the position, start date, end date, and weekly hours. Your DSO uses that to update your I-20 with the CPT endorsement. You cannot start working until the updated I-20 is in your hands.
How do I find Career Counselor employers who already understand CPT authorization?
Migrate Mate lists Career Counselor roles from employers with verified work-authorization history, so you can prioritize outreach to organizations already familiar with F-1 students. University systems, community colleges, and nonprofit workforce development agencies tend to have the most institutional experience with CPT and the least resistance during the hiring process.
Does CPT experience as a Career Counselor count toward H-1B specialty occupation eligibility later?
It can strengthen your case. Career Counselor roles fall under SOC code 21-1012, and USCIS evaluates specialty occupation based on whether the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. Documented CPT experience in a counseling role, combined with a relevant degree, contributes to demonstrating that professional standard when a future employer files an H-1B visa petition.
