Get Access To All JobsEducation And Training CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a curriculum development role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your degree program covers instructional design, educational technology, or curriculum theory and the role applies those specific skills. Your DSO will review the job description against your program's course catalog. Roles that involve only administrative scheduling or clerical support typically don't qualify, even at education employers.
Can I do CPT at a corporate learning and development department?
Corporate L&D roles qualify when the work ties directly to your academic training in adult education, organizational learning, or instructional design. The employer doesn't need to be a school. What matters is that the duties align with your declared field of study and your DSO documents that connection in your updated I-20.
How do I find Education and Training employers who hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with active work-authorization filing history in education and training roles. Cross-reference job descriptions against your program outcomes before applying, then confirm the employer uses E-Verify, which is required for work-authorized F-1 students. School districts, edtech companies, and community colleges are common CPT placements.
What happens if my CPT end date falls before the project finishes?
You must stop working on the CPT end date listed in your I-20, even if the employer's project is incomplete. Request a CPT extension from your DSO before the current authorization expires. Your DSO will need a revised offer letter with the new end date and continued confirmation that the work aligns with your curriculum.
Does CPT in education count toward H-1B specialty occupation if I apply later?
CPT work experience in instructional design, training development, or educational program management can support an H-1B visa specialty occupation argument if the duties required your specific degree. Your employer would document this in the H-1B petition. Review your O*NET occupation profile for the job title to confirm the typical education requirement listed there matches your degree field.
