Learning Specialist CPT jobs let F-1 students apply instructional design, tutoring coordination, and curriculum development skills in authorized work settings. Get Access To All JobsLearning Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Learning Specialist job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly integrates with your enrolled degree program. Learning Specialist positions in instructional design, academic coaching, curriculum development, or educational technology commonly satisfy CPT's curricular relevance requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring documentation showing how the specific duties connect to your coursework, not just your general field of study.
Can I work as a Learning Specialist at a K-12 school on CPT?
Yes. K-12 schools, tutoring centers, and district-level curriculum offices regularly supervise CPT students in Learning Specialist roles. The key is that your position description must align with your academic program, and the employer needs to be willing to coordinate with your DSO on the I-20 authorization before your start date. Public school systems sometimes move slowly on paperwork, so build in extra lead time.
How do I find Learning Specialist employers who are open to CPT students?
Search for Learning Specialist roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented Labor Condition Application filing history in education and training occupations. Employers who have previously filed LCAs for similar roles are more likely to understand CPT work authorization and the I-20 amendment process than those hiring international students for the first time.
Does CPT for a Learning Specialist role count against my OPT eligibility?
It depends on how much full-time CPT you use. If you complete 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, does not reduce your OPT. If you're weighing a full-time CPT opportunity against preserving 12 months of post-graduation OPT, discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting.
What happens if my Learning Specialist CPT role changes job duties mid-semester?
A material change in duties, location, or employer requires a new CPT authorization on a revised I-20 before you continue working in the updated capacity. Working outside the scope of your current CPT authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO as soon as you learn about the change, and don't assume the original I-20 covers the new responsibilities.
