Your DSO must authorize CPT before your start date, and the position must directly support your enrolled coursework in counseling, education, social work, or a related field.

Get Access To All JobsStudent Advisor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Student Advisor role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the position is an integral part of your curriculum and your school's DSO authorizes it. Student Advisor work typically qualifies under programs in counseling, higher education administration, social work, or educational leadership when the duties directly align with your enrolled coursework or required practicum component.
Can I work as a Student Advisor on CPT while taking classes full-time?
Part-time CPT is the standard arrangement for students maintaining full-time enrollment, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week. Full-time CPT, 20 or more hours per week, is allowed during breaks or when the role is the sole remaining program requirement, but 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility.
What documents does my employer need for CPT onboarding?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page, your F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 record. The I-20 CPT page must list the employer name, job title, and authorized dates that match your offer letter exactly. Bring all four documents to your first day.
How do I find Student Advisor employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Student Advisor listings by employers with documented international student work authorization history, which saves significant time compared to cold-applying and explaining CPT from scratch. Education-sector employers, particularly universities and community colleges, are the most CPT-familiar hiring environments for this role.
What happens if my CPT authorization expires before the job ends?
You must stop working immediately. Working after your CPT end date, even by a single day, is unauthorized employment under F-1 regulations and jeopardizes your immigration status. Return to your DSO as early as possible to request an extension, which requires your employer to provide updated employment verification and a revised end date.
