The VCU Libraries’ Health Sciences Library, located in Richmond, VA, invites applications for the Health Sciences Librarian (HSL) Intern position with the Research and Education Department (RED). The position is open to current and recent graduate students in ALA-accredited library/information science programs.
Ideal for a currently enrolled or recently graduated student of library science with an interest in health sciences librarianship. The HSL RED Internship offers up to 25 hours per week and the opportunity to work with practicing health sciences librarians, in person or virtually. Through experiential learning, the individual in this position will be able to build and develop their career portfolio.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Internship Coordinator, the RED Intern is responsible for the completion of outreach and research support projects for the Research and Education Department at VCU Libraries Health Sciences Library. The internship experience will provide an opportunity for a librarian at the beginning of their career to gain practical professional experience in an academic health sciences library. The internship experience supports the development of an individual using the Medical Library Association’s Competencies for Lifelong Learning and Professional Success. The RED Intern will work closely with health sciences librarians and directly with library users, including VCU faculty, students, and staff. There is also the potential to work with members of the Greater Richmond community. The RED Intern will gain the knowledge and skills to provide research and instruction support through opportunities to interact with users, conduct library orientations, present library workshops; as well as the possibility to participate in evidence synthesis projects. Work accomplished by the RED Intern could also include the creation and maintenance of learning objects such as research guides or instructional videos, development of workshop lesson plans, and data analysis and assessment support. The RED Intern will work with the Internship Coordinator to establish achievable personal and project goals for the duration of the internship period.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
- Employment contingent upon enrollment in or recent completion (no more than two years) of an ALA accredited Master Information or Library Science program.
- Basic knowledge of library resources, such as academic library research databases, websites and information sources.
- Strong service orientation.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with research methods and practices, database searching techniques, instructional design techniques or project management skills.
SALARY RANGE
- Salary Range: $20 - 21/ hour

Does CPT work authorization cover unpaid internships at schools or nonprofits?
Yes, CPT covers both paid and unpaid positions as long as the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO authorizes it. Many Education nonprofits and public schools offer unpaid placements. Your I-20 must list the employer, and the authorization must be in place before your first day regardless of compensation.
Can I do CPT at a K-12 school if I'm enrolled in a graduate Education program?
Yes, as long as your graduate program includes a practicum, fieldwork, or supervised teaching requirement that the K-12 placement satisfies. Your DSO will verify the curriculum connection. Bring documentation from your program coordinator confirming the placement counts toward your degree requirements.
How do I find Education employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for Education sector roles that include CPT-eligible postings. Employers with prior LCA or E-Verify filing history have already worked with F-1 students and understand the authorization process. University career centers and school district HR departments are also familiar with I-20 documentation requirements.
Does full-time CPT in Education affect my post-graduation OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, doesn't affect OPT. If your Education role is structured as full-time and runs across multiple semesters, count the total authorized days carefully before accepting. Your DSO can confirm your running total.
What documentation does an Education employer need from me to verify my CPT work authorization?
You provide your valid passport, your current I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsement on page three, and your F-1 visa stamp. The I-20 must list the specific employer and the authorized dates. Employers record these documents for Form I-9 verification. No separate USCIS filing is required from the employer for CPT.
