St. Mary's College of Maryland is accepting applications for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor and Internship Coordinator in its newly approved Masters of Arts in Counseling and Clinical Psychology (MACCP) program, beginning August 2027. The MACCP program is the second Masters program at SMCM (following the successful Master of Teaching program). The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $79,000 based on level of experience; startup costs are negotiable; benefits information is available online.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The standard teaching load is 12 credits (usually, the equivalent of 3 courses) per semester. The Internship Coordinator will be in charge of preparing for internship placements (which is built into the teaching load). Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the Master of Arts in Counseling and Clinical Psychology program (e.g., Psychopathology and Diagnosis, Multicultural Counseling, Lifespan Development, Group Counseling, Psychological Testing, Family Systems in Practice), as well as the possibility of undergraduate courses in your area of specialization to provide cross-program collaboration with the Psychology major.
At SMCM, we seek faculty whose pedagogical practice involves culturally responsive teaching practices that promote belonging and inclusion. New faculty are paired with mentors to support your growth as a teacher-scholar. In addition, we offer start-up funding to support your research, especially encouraging projects that relate to the training of psychotherapy practitioners. Over time, professors take on roles in services to the program and College to support the College's mission; first-year faculty are exempt from college-wide committee work.

Does an Assistant Professor role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum. A PhD student in education or life sciences taking a semester-long teaching or research appointment at a university typically meets this standard. Your DSO makes the final call, so bring a written job description and offer letter that maps the duties to your degree requirements when you request authorization.
Can I do CPT at the same university where I'm enrolled as a student?
Yes, and this is actually one of the most common CPT arrangements for Assistant Professor roles. Many doctoral students are hired as visiting instructors or postdoctoral teaching fellows within their own institution. Your DSO will still require a separate authorization and a formal offer letter from the hiring department, even if it's the same school.
How do I find Assistant Professor positions that are open to F-1 CPT students?
Search for academic positions at institutions that already have experience hiring international students on work authorization. If your Assistant Professor appointment runs full-time across two semesters, you'll want to weigh that trade-off carefully with your DSO before accepting the role.
What happens if my CPT authorization expires before my appointment ends?
You must stop working the day your CPT authorization expires. Assistant Professor contracts often run on academic-year cycles that don't align neatly with semester-based CPT windows. Plan ahead by requesting a new I-20 with updated CPT dates before the current one lapses, and give your DSO enough lead time to process the update without interruption to your employment.
