Get Access To All JobsHigh School Principal CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does High School Principal work qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the role is an integral part of your degree program and your school explicitly requires or allows it for credit or curriculum completion. Programs in educational leadership, school administration, or K-12 policy are the most common qualifying tracks. Your DSO makes the final determination, and they'll need a job description and offer letter to evaluate fit.
Can I work as a High School Principal at a public school district on CPT?
Yes. Public school districts are among the most straightforward CPT employers because they're accustomed to government employment verification processes and are frequently enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm the district's E-Verify status before accepting the offer, and ensure your I-20 is updated by your DSO before your first day.
What happens if my CPT placement at a school district runs past my I-20 end date?
Your CPT authorization expires on the end date printed on your I-20. Working beyond that date without an updated I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation and jeopardizes your F-1 status. Contact your DSO at least two weeks before the end date to request an extension if the placement will continue.
How do I find school districts that are open to hiring F-1 CPT students for principal roles?
Districts that have previously filed LCAs or H-1B visa petitions for education administration roles are more likely to have HR teams familiar with work authorization requirements. You can browse Migrate Mate to identify districts with that filing history and prioritize outreach to those employers during your job search.
Does full-time CPT as a High School Principal affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of duration. Review your CPT history with your DSO before accepting a full-time placement, especially if you plan to use OPT after graduation.
