Get Access To All JobsEducation Counselor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Education Counselor role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if your degree program, whether in school counseling, higher education administration, or a related field, requires or offers academic credit for field placements. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your curriculum, not just the title. Roles involving student advising, academic planning, or career guidance at accredited institutions are the strongest fits.
Can I do part-time CPT as an Education Counselor while taking classes?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely, so most F-1 students in counseling programs opt for part-time placements during the academic year and switch to full-time only in the summer if needed.
What documents do I need to start an Education Counselor CPT job?
You need a DSO-authorized I-20 with the specific CPT employer, job location, and employment dates listed. Your employer will also need a copy of this I-20 for their E-Verify or I-9 records. Some school districts require a background clearance, so start that process as soon as you receive your offer to avoid a start-date gap.
How do I find Education Counselor employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate shows employers with active hiring history for international students, making it easier to identify organizations familiar with DSO timelines and CPT documentation. Target K-12 districts, community colleges, university advising offices, and nonprofit college-access organizations, which regularly work with graduate students on field placements.
Can my CPT Education Counselor position count toward state licensure hours?
Many states allow supervised counseling hours completed during an accredited field placement to count toward licensure requirements, but the supervising professional typically must hold a valid state license. Confirm with your program coordinator and the state licensing board before your placement begins so the supervision arrangement is documented correctly from day one.
