Get Access To All JobsPart-time Lecturer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Part-time Lecturer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It can, but only if teaching in that subject area is an integral part of your degree curriculum, not just related to it. Your program must formally require or recognize the work as an academic component. A marketing student lecturing on digital advertising for a business department is a stronger case than a generic teaching assistant role. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how your program documents the connection.
Can I hold a Part-time Lecturer CPT position at a different school than the one I attend?
Yes. CPT does not require you to work at your own institution. You can teach at a community college, university extension program, or any accredited institution, as long as your DSO approves the specific employer and position on your I-20. The curricular connection must be to your own degree program, not to the hiring institution's requirements.
How do I find Part-time Lecturer openings that are open to F-1 CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Part-time Lecturer roles by employers with a history of hiring F-1 students, so you spend less time on applications that will stall at the CPT paperwork stage. Beyond that, contacting department coordinators directly at community colleges and university continuing education offices often surfaces openings that aren't widely posted.
Does 12 months of full-time CPT as a lecturer affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, does not count toward that 12-month limit regardless of how long you hold the position. Most Part-time Lecturer roles fall under the part-time threshold, but confirm your authorized hours on your I-20 with your DSO to be certain.
What documentation does the hiring institution need from me to process CPT employment?
You'll need to provide your updated I-20 showing CPT authorization for that specific employer, your valid F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. The institution will use these to complete your I-9 verification. Some universities also request a letter from your DSO confirming the academic basis for the CPT authorization, so ask your DSO to prepare one alongside the updated I-20.
