Get Access To All JobsAutomotive Technology Instructor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Automotive Technology Instructor role qualify for CPT?
It can qualify if teaching automotive technology is an integral part of your declared curriculum, such as a vocational education, career and technical education, or automotive technology degree program. Your DSO determines eligibility on a case-by-case basis. The role must directly support an academic requirement, not just be related to your field in a general sense.
Can I teach automotive technology on CPT if I don't hold an ASE certification?
CPT authorization doesn't require ASE certification, but many community colleges and technical schools do require it as a condition of employment. Check each institution's adjunct hiring requirements separately. Some employers will accept documented industry experience in lieu of certification for entry-level instructor positions, especially for part-time or lab assistant roles.
How many hours per week can I work as an instructor on CPT?
CPT can be authorized as part-time (under 20 hours per week) or full-time (20 hours or more). If you accumulate 12 months of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility after graduation, so most F-1 students in academic programs stay under that threshold. Discuss scheduling with your DSO before committing to a full-time instructor contract.
Where can I find Automotive Technology Instructor jobs that are open to F-1 students?
Migrate Mate lists Automotive Technology Instructor positions filtered for employers with work authorization experience. This is faster than sorting through general job postings from employers unfamiliar with CPT. Once you identify a role, confirm the employer can provide a formal offer letter with the details your DSO needs for SEVIS authorization.
What happens if my CPT authorization period ends before the semester finishes?
You must stop working immediately when your CPT authorization expires. CPT is tied to a specific employer, start date, and end date on your I-20. If the semester extends beyond your original authorization, your DSO needs to issue an updated I-20 before you continue working. Working past the authorized end date is an unauthorized employment violation.
