Does a University Librarian role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position is directly tied to your degree program. For MLIS or library science students, roles involving reference services, cataloging, digital resource management, or instruction typically satisfy the integral curriculum requirement. Your DSO will evaluate the job description against your program's learning outcomes, so request a detailed offer letter that maps duties to specific courses or competencies before submitting your CPT application.
Can I do CPT at a library outside my own university?
Yes. CPT authorization covers off-campus employers as long as your school's DSO approves the position. Academic libraries at peer institutions, public university systems, law school libraries, and medical center libraries all qualify as CPT sites, provided the work aligns with your curriculum. Some programs have established relationships with specific library networks, which can accelerate DSO approval.
How do I find University Librarian CPT positions that are open to F-1 students?
Migrate Mate lists academic library openings filtered by employer sponsorship and authorization history, which helps you identify departments already familiar with F-1 students. Library positions at large research universities tend to have more structured onboarding for CPT students than smaller institutions. Searching by institution type and library specialty narrows results to roles where your CPT paperwork won't be the first the HR team has processed.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so the timing of your librarian CPT matters. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, has no impact on OPT regardless of duration. If your program requires a year-long practicum in a library setting, confirm with your DSO whether it will be classified as full-time or part-time before you authorize it.
What should I ask a library employer before starting CPT?
Ask whether the library department has an E-Verify account, since USCIS requires E-Verify enrollment for any employer sponsoring STEM OPT extensions. Also confirm whether the institution has previously filed H-1B visa petitions or PERM labor certification for librarian roles, as those records indicate whether long-term sponsorship is realistic. A department that can't answer both questions clearly may not have the HR capacity to support your post-graduation status transitions.
