Does a K-12 teaching assistant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your program of study is in education, child development, or a related field and the duties directly support your academic objectives. Your DSO will evaluate whether the role is integral to your curriculum, not just related to it. Positions involving classroom instruction, lesson planning, or student assessment typically qualify more readily than general administrative or clerical roles at a school.
Can I do CPT at a private school or only a public school district?
Both are eligible CPT employers. Private schools, charter schools, and public districts all qualify as long as the work is directly tied to your degree requirements and your DSO authorizes the specific employer on your I-20. Private schools are not required to use E-Verify unless they receive federal contracts or grants, which affects the onboarding process but not your CPT eligibility itself.
How do I find K-12 employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Search Migrate Mate to browse K-12 education roles from employers with experience hiring F-1 students. Many smaller school districts have never hired a CPT student before, so targeting employers already familiar with work authorization documentation saves time and reduces the risk of an offer falling through during onboarding.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the school changes my role mid-semester?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer and position type listed on your I-20. If your duties change significantly, for example moving from a classroom aide to an administrative coordinator, your DSO may need to issue a new I-20 reflecting the updated role. Work with your DSO before accepting any role change to avoid a gap in authorized employment.
Does full-time CPT in K-12 education affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT use eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS regulations. Part-time CPT, regardless of how many semesters you use it, does not affect OPT. If you're planning to pursue H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation, preserving your OPT is critical, so track your full-time CPT months carefully with your DSO throughout your program.
