Tutor CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does tutoring qualify as CPT for any F-1 student?

Not automatically. Tutoring qualifies for CPT only if your DSO can document a direct connection between the tutoring work and your enrolled curriculum. A computer science student tutoring calculus may qualify if their program includes math pedagogy or learning theory. A student tutoring subjects unrelated to their major will likely not get authorization.

Can I tutor students privately on CPT, or does it need to be through an employer?

CPT requires an employer-employee relationship with a legitimate organization. Self-employed or independent private tutoring does not satisfy CPT requirements because there's no employer to verify the work arrangement. You need a formal offer from a tutoring center, school, or education company that can provide documentation your DSO accepts.

How do I find tutoring employers who will hire F-1 CPT students?

Migrate Mate lists tutoring and education roles from employers with work-authorization experience. University-affiliated tutoring centers are often the most straightforward option since they're accustomed to CPT paperwork. Private test-prep companies and after-school programs vary widely, so confirm their familiarity with F-1 CPT before applying.

What happens if my tutoring hours vary week to week on CPT?

Variable hours are common in tutoring, but they matter for your CPT classification. USCIS and your DSO distinguish between part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) and full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week). If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you permanently forfeit OPT eligibility, so tracking your hours accurately is essential.

Can I use O*NET to verify that a tutoring job title supports my CPT request?

Yes. Reviewing your role against the O*NET occupation profile for tutors and instructors gives you standardized language describing the knowledge and skills involved. This can strengthen your DSO request by showing how the role's defined tasks align with your academic program, particularly if your DSO asks you to justify the connection in writing.
