Get Access To All JobsSubstitute Teacher CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does substitute teaching qualify for CPT as an F-1 student?
It can qualify, but only if your academic program has a direct curricular connection to K-12 instruction, educational psychology, or a related field. Your DSO must document how the substitute teaching role integrates with specific courses you're enrolled in. Placements that are simply convenient work experience without that academic tie will not meet CPT eligibility standards.
Can I work through a substitute teacher staffing agency on CPT?
CPT authorization is tied to a specific employer, which creates complexity when a staffing agency places you across multiple school districts. Your DSO needs to authorize the agency as the employer of record, and some schools require a separate authorization for each building. Clarify the employer-of-record structure with your DSO before signing any agency agreement.
How do I find substitute teacher positions that accept F-1 CPT work authorization?
Many school districts are unfamiliar with CPT and may initially say they don't sponsor visas, which is a different process entirely. Use Migrate Mate to identify districts with experience hiring international students on work authorization. Reaching out to HR directly with a clear explanation of CPT, and a letter from your DSO, helps avoid early-stage rejections based on misunderstanding.
What documents does a school district HR office typically need for CPT?
Most districts will ask for your valid I-20 with the CPT authorization endorsed on page two, your F-1 visa stamp, and your passport. Some will also request your DSO's authorization letter and your I-94 arrival record. USCIS does not issue a separate EAD for CPT, so your endorsed I-20 is the primary work authorization document you'll present.
Does part-time substitute teaching count as part-time CPT?
Yes. If you work fewer than 20 hours per week as a substitute, it qualifies as part-time CPT and does not affect your OPT eligibility after graduation. Exceeding 20 hours per week converts it to full-time CPT. One full academic year of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility entirely, so tracking your weekly hours across all placements matters.
