Get Access To All JobsSpecial Education Teacher CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Special Education Teacher role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the placement is an integral part of your degree curriculum and your program requires field-based teaching experience. Your DSO will verify that the job duties, such as writing IEPs, delivering specialized instruction, or conducting behavioral assessments, directly advance your academic learning objectives. A generic classroom aide position typically does not qualify.
Can I work as a Special Education Teacher on CPT without a state teaching license?
Most public school districts require a valid state special education license before you can serve as the teacher of record. Some states offer emergency or provisional licenses for candidates completing a degree, which can cover a CPT placement. Check your target state's department of education requirements and discuss the timeline with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I find school districts that have experience hiring F-1 students on CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with documented DOL filing history for Special Education Teacher roles. Districts that have previously navigated F-1 work authorization are far less likely to withdraw offers mid-process due to HR confusion about CPT eligibility or E-Verify requirements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the school district delays my start date?
CPT is tied to specific authorized dates on your I-20. If your employer pushes your start date past the end date on your current CPT authorization, you cannot begin work until your DSO issues an updated I-20 reflecting the new dates. Working outside authorized CPT dates is an F-1 status violation, so notify your DSO immediately if dates shift.
Is part-time CPT as a Special Education Teacher better than full-time for preserving OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, does not reduce your 12-month OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT for one year or more eliminates OPT entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Many F-1 students in education programs structure their CPT as part-time to protect post-graduation work authorization.
