Senior Database Reliability Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Database Reliability Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum. Graduate programs in computer science, data engineering, or information systems typically cover distributed systems, database internals, and reliability engineering directly. Your DSO will review the job description against your coursework to confirm the connection before signing the CPT authorization. Roles involving only operational tasks with no curricular link may not qualify.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Senior DRE without affecting my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT of 12 months or more exhausts your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, structure your CPT as part-time (under 20 hours per week) or keep full-time CPT under 12 months. Confirm the exact running total with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer, since the count is cumulative across all CPT periods.
What should I check in a job description to confirm the role supports CPT?
Look for responsibilities tied to coursework outcomes: database performance engineering, high-availability design, incident response, capacity planning, or replication architecture. Generic titles like 'database admin' with purely operational duties are harder to justify. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for database administrators or software developers to see standardized task descriptions your DSO may reference when evaluating the request.
How do I find Senior DRE employers who are familiar with F-1 work authorization?
Migrate Mate shows which employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for database and infrastructure roles, giving you a shortlist of companies with demonstrated sponsorship experience. Targeting these employers reduces the risk of an offer falling through because the HR team isn't equipped to handle F-1 documentation. You can filter by role type and location to narrow to positions that match your CPT timeline.
Does my CPT employer need to file anything with USCIS or DOL on my behalf?
For CPT itself, no federal filing is required from the employer. The authorization is handled entirely through your school via your DSO and I-20. However, if the employer plans to sponsor you for an H-1B after CPT, they'll need to file a Labor Condition Application with DOL and a petition with USCIS at that point. Ask recruiters upfront whether the company has done LCA filings for database roles before.
