Get Access To All JobsData Integration Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Integration Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your program has a data engineering, information systems, or computer science focus. The role must directly relate to your declared major and appear on your I-20 before you start. Positions involving ETL pipeline development, API management, or data warehouse design map cleanly to most STEM graduate curricula. Your DSO makes the final call on eligibility.
Can I do CPT for a remote Data Integration Specialist job?
Remote positions qualify for CPT as long as the employer is a U.S.-based entity and the work is integral to your curriculum. Your I-20 must list the employer's U.S. address, not your home address. Confirm with your DSO that remote employment is acceptable under your school's CPT policy, since some institutions require an on-site component.
How do I find Data Integration Specialist employers open to CPT students?
Search on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers with documented work authorization history. Focus on mid-size technology, healthcare, and financial services companies, since they frequently run data modernization projects that need integration support without requiring a full-time permanent hire from the start.
What happens to my CPT authorization if I switch data platforms mid-internship?
Your CPT authorization is tied to the employer named on your I-20, not the specific tools or platforms. A technology stack change within the same company doesn't require a new authorization. If the employer changes or the job duties shift significantly away from your approved curriculum, return to your DSO for an updated I-20 before the change takes effect.
Does working as a Data Integration Specialist on CPT count toward future H-1B specialty occupation evidence?
Yes. CPT employment generates pay stubs, offer letters, and project documentation that can support a specialty occupation argument later. Data integration roles typically map to SOC code 15-1242 under O*NET, which USCIS recognizes as requiring a directly related bachelor's degree. Keep all employer correspondence and project records in case they're requested during an H-1B petition review.
