Get Access To All JobsUnderwriter CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an underwriter internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly relates to your enrolled coursework in finance, risk management, insurance, or a related field. Your DSO will verify that the underwriting duties, evaluating risk, analyzing financial data, pricing policies, integrate with your curriculum. A generic business internship label isn't enough. The job description must reflect the academic connection your program requires.
Can I do CPT at an insurance company if my degree is in finance, not actuarial science?
Yes. CPT authorization is based on the relationship between your coursework and the job duties, not an exact match between your degree title and the employer's industry. Finance coursework covering credit analysis, probability, or financial modeling maps directly to commercial or mortgage underwriting roles. Your DSO will make the final determination based on your specific curriculum.
How do I find underwriter employers who are familiar with CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with a history of hiring F-1 students, which significantly cuts down on time spent explaining CPT basics to recruiters. Larger insurers, regional banks, and specialty finance firms that run structured internship programs tend to have HR teams already familiar with the authorization process.
What happens to my CPT if the underwriting internship extends beyond my authorized period?
Working beyond your CPT end date puts your F-1 status at risk. If the employer extends your internship, return to your DSO immediately to request an updated authorization before the original period expires. Most programs allow extensions as long as the academic integration requirement still holds and you remain enrolled full-time.
Does CPT for an underwriter role affect my future OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT of any duration does not affect OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates standard OPT eligibility, including the STEM OPT extension. If you're considering a full-time summer underwriting CPT position, track your cumulative full-time CPT days carefully with your DSO before accepting extended or back-to-back placements.
