Get Access To All JobsAccounting Associate CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Accounting Associate role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your accounting or finance program includes a practicum, internship, or cooperative education requirement. The key test is whether your DSO can tie the job duties, reconciliations, financial reporting, accounts payable, directly to a course or degree requirement. Purely clerical roles without an accounting function generally won't qualify.
Can I do part-time CPT as an Accounting Associate while still in class?
Yes. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count against your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely, so most students doing CPT during the academic year keep hours below that threshold.
How do I find Accounting Associate employers who understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with Labor Condition Application filing history in accounting and finance roles. LCA filings indicate a firm has sponsored international employees before and is familiar with authorization requirements, making the CPT onboarding conversation much simpler than approaching employers with no sponsorship track record.
What documents does an employer need to onboard me on CPT?
Your employer needs your current I-20 with the CPT endorsement showing their company name and your start date, your F-1 visa stamp if you've traveled internationally, and your I-94 arrival record. E-Verify is not required for CPT, but some HR departments will still run it, your I-20 and passport are the primary authorization documents.
If my CPT accounting role leads to a full-time offer, what visa options follow?
Your most direct path is OPT, which gives you 12 months of post-graduation work authorization. If your degree is in accounting, finance, or a STEM-designated field, a 24-month STEM OPT extension may apply. Many accounting employers then sponsor H-1B visa petitions, which USCIS processes under the annual April lottery for the following October start date.
