Does an Equity Trader role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the position directly relates to your field of study, such as finance, economics, or applied mathematics, and your school confirms it's an integral part of your curriculum. Roles involving securities analysis, order execution, or quantitative research typically satisfy that requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program and the employer's job description.
Can I do CPT at a proprietary trading firm, not just a bank?
CPT authorization isn't limited by employer type. Proprietary trading firms qualify as long as the work integrates with your academic program and your DSO approves it. The key is that the job description supports the curricular connection, hands-on trading, risk modeling, or market analysis tied to your coursework all meet that standard.
How do I find Equity Trader roles open to CPT students?
Most standard job postings don't specify CPT eligibility, so filtering by employers with demonstrated F-1 hiring experience saves significant time. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with LCA and work authorization filing history in financial services, letting you focus on firms that already understand and accommodate F-1 work authorization rather than cold-pitching employers unfamiliar with CPT.
What happens to my OPT if I complete full-time CPT as an Equity Trader?
If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT, you lose all OPT eligibility after graduation. This is a hard rule under SEVIS regulations with no exceptions. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count toward that limit regardless of duration, so structuring your trading hours carefully protects your post-graduation options.
Do Series 7 or other FINRA licenses affect my CPT eligibility?
Holding or pursuing FINRA licenses doesn't affect your CPT authorization itself, which is determined by your DSO based on academic fit, not professional credentials. That said, some Equity Trader roles require Series 7 sponsorship from the employer before you can legally execute trades. Confirm licensing requirements with the employer during the offer process so there are no surprises at your start date.
