Does CPT work at a private equity firm count against my OPT?
Only full-time CPT affects OPT eligibility. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program, you lose OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning fewer than 20 hours per week, never reduces your OPT balance regardless of duration. Confirm your authorized hours on your I-20 before starting work.
Can I do CPT at a private equity firm if my degree is in a non-finance field?
Your CPT authorization depends on your specific program curriculum, not your degree label. If your program includes a course or practicum that covers corporate finance, investment analysis, or portfolio management, your DSO may authorize CPT at a PE firm. The connection must be documented in your enrollment, not just assumed from your major.
How do I find private equity firms that are open to hiring F-1 students on CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with F-1 CPT hiring history in investment and asset management roles. Boutique and mid-market PE firms tend to be more flexible than large fund managers because they're less constrained by centralized HR policies. Having your CPT authorization letter ready before outreach signals you've already handled the compliance side.
What documents does a private equity firm need from me to hire me on CPT?
The firm needs your CPT-authorized I-20, your current visa stamp, your I-94 arrival record, and your EAD if applicable. Some firms also request a letter from your DSO confirming the role is integral to your curriculum. Provide all documents before your first day, as employers are required to complete I-9 verification within three business days of your start date.
Can a private equity internship on CPT lead to H-1B sponsorship later?
CPT itself doesn't create an H-1B visa sponsorship obligation, but strong internship performance is often how full-time H-1B offers originate in PE. Firms that hire returning analysts typically file H-1B petitions during the March lottery window. Clarify the firm's sponsorship track record before accepting the offer so you're not surprised at the H-1B stage.
