Does a Financial Officer internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your established curriculum and your school lists it as a required or elective credit-bearing component. Part-time CPT covers internships up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session. Full-time CPT applies during breaks or when the position is a required co-op. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your program's curriculum structure.
Can I work as a Financial Officer on CPT before finishing my degree?
CPT is available before graduation as long as you're in valid F-1 status, have completed one full academic year, and your program allows work experience as part of the curriculum. You can't start work before your DSO updates your I-20 with the CPT authorization. Any work before that date, even a single day, violates your F-1 status.
How do I find Financial Officer employers who are CPT-ready?
Search Migrate Mate for Financial Officer roles filtered by employers with LCA filing history. Employers who've filed Labor Condition Applications for finance positions have already navigated DOL wage compliance and are far more likely to understand CPT authorization requirements and support an H-1B visa filing after your OPT period begins.
Does full-time CPT as a Financial Officer affect my OPT eligibility?
Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, which also eliminates the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, has no impact on OPT. If your Financial Officer role is structured as full-time CPT across multiple semesters, track cumulative days carefully with your DSO to avoid inadvertently exhausting your OPT entitlement.
What documents does my employer need to complete I-9 for a CPT role?
For I-9 verification, you present your valid foreign passport and your CPT-authorized I-20. The I-20 must show the specific employer name and the authorized dates that match your employment start date. Your employer cannot complete I-9 with an I-20 that doesn't name them directly. USCIS requires the CPT authorization on the I-20 to serve as your work authorization document.
